There are three basic choices when installing a steel door. There is the simple flush metal pan door, a raised metal pan door or a metal pan door with lites in the top.
One of the applications for a flush metal pan door is to correct a door opening that may be out of plumb. If you have an opening that’s out of square, (plumb), this type of door will hide any imperfections that you have in the opening. If you install a raised panel door in this instance (an out of plumb opening), the header or side jambs will most likely cut through some of the raised panel and the door will not look square. The door must always be installed level in order to work properly, no matter what the structure of the door opening is.
One thing to always remember with steel doors is that if the concrete is cracked or out of level, you may not get a tight seal on the floor as the door must be installed level, and not necessarily flush with, the concrete floor. On the other hand, a wood door can be scribed and cut to fit the floor’s imperfections, which is not the case with a metal door. You only have minimal adjustments that can be made for the seal to contact correctly with the floor with a steel door. A proper seal with the proper installation will keep out the wind, weather and other debris provided that the concrete is free of cracks, heaving and is level.
If you have an uneven flooring surface, your better bet is to go with a wood door which can be cut and fitted perfectly to fit the floor. This also ensures the tighest seal possible.
